Žitný ostrov to be most endangered by drought

Drought will have an impact on agricultural production as a result of climate change. The most endangered region of Slovakia is therefore Žitný ostrov in southwestern Slovakia. Furthermore, Bratislava II, Senec and Bratislava V are among the districts with the highest drought risk. This is according to an analysis by the Environmental Policy Institute (IEP).

"A large proportion of Senec's territory is used as agricultural land, which increases the risk of drought. Another group of districts at risk, although not as vulnerable as in the south-west, is located in the south-east of Slovakia around Trebišov and Košice," the analysts added. They point out that south-central Slovakia, the Gemer region, is threatened by a shortage of water resources, which is exacerbated by geological factors preventing water accumulation.

The Institute points out that Žitný ostrov is an extremely important agricultural area and the largest reservoir of drinking water in Slovakia. Its territory is also the largest river island in Europe. It has largely been deforested due to agricultural activity. Analysts argue that this exacerbates the level of vulnerability to drought.
