President marking Unfairly Prosecuted Persons Day

Despite differences of opinion and values between the more liberal and conservative parts of society, the protection of democracy should remain a common interest, President Zuzana Caputova stated on Thursday on the occasion of the Unfairly Prosecuted Persons Day.

"The Unfairly Prosecuted Persons Day brings to life the words of Silvester Krcmery that the truth is stronger than power and can't be silenced by any repression," pointed out the president, noting that 73 years ago the Communist regime's violent intervention against the church took place via the forced removal of monks from monasteries, adding that the violent exercise of power has supporters even today. "Many forget the dark sides of our past or cover them up with nostalgic optimism," she stressed on a social network.

"No matter how we are sometimes divided by differences of opinion and values between the more liberal and conservative parts of society, it remains our common interest to protect democracy and not to allow similar events to be repeated, so that nobody suffers for their faith or beliefs," she pointed out.
