Slovakia's hiking trails network is one of the best in the world

Slovakia's hiking trails network is one of the best in the world. Chairman of the Slovak Tourists Club Frantisek Siller told this to the TASR press agency. "Hiking trails are the underlying infrastructure that guides hikers to locations they may not have found on their own. The trails pass through various natural and historical landmarks like castles, chateaus, ruins, monasteries, mountain huts or springs, and many others," explained Siller. The Slovak Tourists Club head noted that the creation and maintenance of Slovakia's hiking trails network was accepted onto the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage at the end of last year. "We have nothing to be embarrassed about. Although concerning tourism we still have much to learn," pointed out the chairman. This tourist organisation is celebrating this year the 150th anniversary of the setting up of the first tourist club in today's Slovakia. "Back then, the exploration of nature was a privilege of the rich, but the reason behind it stayed the same. People nowadays, like in the past, like to spend their time in nature," noted Siller. According to him, in today's digital and hectic age a trip to nature is much more valuable. Even better is to get to a place without the network coverage and enjoy nature uninterrupted. Many people realised the scarcity and irreplaceable value of nature during the pandemic when restrictions were in place. "Since then, we're observing a higher interest in the club's membership in all regions," added Frantisek Siller.
