There are a total of 196,210 apartments in Bratislava's five districts, with 177,622 households having permanent residence in the aforementioned number according to the latest census, meaning that at least 19,288 apartments, or 9.8 percent of the total, are vacant, rented out on a short-term basis or serving other purposes, states analysis by Bencont Investments.
As far as renting goes, the average rent plus energy bills in Bratislava stood at €661 per month in the second quarter of 2014. Rents in I district - which includes the Old Town - were 26 percent higher than the average. Meanwhile, Bencont Investments analyst Matúš Jančura calculated that older apartments remain the most accessible option for housing, as the prices of these are 42 percent lower than those in newly-built blocks of flats.
