Almost one-third of the 331 motorcyclists who were killed in accidents in Slovakia between 1992-2012 were driving under the influence of alcohol, according to a study done by doctor Martin Janik from the Forensic Institute of the Jessenius Medical Faculty.
Two-thirds of them died at the scene of the accidents, with half of all of the incidents involving crashes with other vehicles, and about a quarter with static objects such as trees, poles and crash barriers. "The brain and lungs were the most frequently injured internal organs”, said Janik, adding that if a motorcyclist crashes into a solid object at a speed of 10-12 kilometres per hour, only light injuries may be expected, but a crash at 80-90 kilometres per hour causes injuries that are virtually incompatible with life.
