Prime Minister discusses 2035 ban on combustion engine with carmakers

Interim Prime Minister Eduard Heger met with Automobile Industry Association President Alexander Matusek on Wednesday to discuss EU plans to discontinue the production of combustion engines after 2035. According to the Prime Minister, Slovakia is a country with strong ties to the automobile industry and thus wants to preserve the competitiveness of its factories even in the ecological era of the automobile industry. Representatives of the automobile industry are prepared for the transition to electric cars. In addition, Alexander Matusek pointed out that the post-2035 ban on the production of combustion engines does not mean that cars equipped with the technology will be banned from roads as well. It is rather the proposal of the new EURO 7 emission norm, due to be introduced as of July 2025, that causes complications to the carmakers, who see it as an unfeasible deadline. Heger promised to discuss the issue of EURO 7 with his counterparts at an upcoming summit of the Council of the EU, slated to begin on Thursday, March 23, in Brussels.
