World Water Day was declared as Water Day in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly at a Conference in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. Thus, World Water Day has been celebrated since 1993 in accordance with the recommendations of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development.
