The demolition of the house of Jan Kuciak and Martina Kušnírová began in the village Veľká Mača (Trnava region). The Memorial to Freedom of Speech will subsequently be built on the site. The idea behind the monument is to remind the public of the courage of the two individuals and to teach future generations. "As requested by the family of the deceased, all structures are being removed from the property. The construction and maintenance of the monument are being funded by the Trnava region," explained Jozef Viskupič, chairman of the Trnava self-governing region. The construction work should begin next year, after land and construction proceedings are completed and the construction workforce is put together. Viskupic noted that a firm from Sered has offered to carry out the demolition work free of charge. The estimated costs of constructing the monument are €388,200. The chosen construction plan under the name Garden, which was drawn up by Benjamin Bradnansky, Vit Halada and Martin Piacek, includes slightly tilted ground to symbolise the lack of equality and permanent change. The new landmark will be a place of remembrance of past events and a site of self-reflection and determination to create a better future.
