School tuck shops are no longer allowed to sell energy and sugary drinks, caffeinated beverages, hamburgers and fried food in line with a Health Ministry-sponsored decree that entered into force on Wednesday. The prohibited items will be replaced by fresh fruits and vegetables, organic juices without preservatives and meat products with at least 80-percent meat content. According to Public Health Office, a healthier range in tuck shops, together with the food offered in school canteens, will create a nutritionally rich range of food and meals for children. The health authority pointed to the fact that paediatricians registered more than 12,000 obese children in 2022.
