Interim Justice Minister aiming to set up working group to deal with local government debts

Interim Justice Minister Viliam Karas reported on Monday that he is planning to set up a working group to draw up a legislative proposal for solving the issues of insolvent local authorities. The minister announced this at a press conference with Bratislava mayor Matus Vallo and Devin borough mayor Jana Jakubkovic. The Bratislava borough of Devin has been under receivership since 2005. Devin's debt started to swell in 1996, when a certain group wanted to start a real estate and development business on behalf of the borough. In late February, the City of Bratislava declared that the best way to handle the situation concerning Devin would be a change of the law by the Finance Ministry. The ministry responded that it was ready for further methodological guidelines, noting that it can't deal with the debts of local governments, however.
