Police have suspect in case of death threats against RTVS journalist

The investigation into death threats against RTVS host Marta Janckarova has led the police to a specific suspect, police chief Stefan Hamran announced at an extraordinary session of the Culture and Media House Committee on Tuesday.
Hamran confirmed that, aside from the journalist, another aggrieved party in the case is President Zuzana Caputova.
The case is being investigated by the National Criminal Agency (NAKA), despite the fact that it doesn't fall under its jurisdiction. "I've decided so as the Police Corps President, since this concerns journalists. And I think that it's about time this society lays down a red line for any violence directed against journalists because we know what happened in this country in the past and I'd be unhappy to see it happen again," added Hamran.
Hamran also announced that the police will create points of contact for investigative journalists in order to provide them with more efficient protection, if they're threatened.
Interim Justice Minister Viliam Karas unveiled his judicial policy reform bill, set to be discussed by the Government. The motion aims to introduce more stringent punishments for slander and will apply not only the profession of journalists, but also doctors and nurses. "We address the issue of vexatious criminal proceedings against journalists, amend the legal definition of slander and address the incitement, which involves calls for gatherings in front of homes of various persons, including journalists, the attacks against various professions, such as doctors and journalists," said Karas.
Invited to the session were also Radio and Television Slovakia (RTVS) general director Lubos Machaj and Culture Ministry state secretary Radoslav Kutas. (TASR)
