Berlinale: Slovak director Mira Fornay’s film Mimi awarded

The movie Mimi by Slovak director Mira Fornay won the Grand Prix of the International Jury in the Generation Kplus section, which is dedicated to films for children and young people, at the Berlinale 2023 film festival. "This film captivated the jury from the very first frame. Diverse themes, characters and plots collide in the enchanting microcosm of a forest that becomes the setting for a headstrong young heroine," the jury said in justifying the selection of Mimi as the best film in its category Fornay's fourth feature film celebrates ingenuity, creativity and open-mindedness, according to the judges. "With its tone, pace and sense of humour, it impressively straddles the line between reality and fantasy," the Generation Kplus international jury highlighted.

Mimi (The Heroine's Journey) had its world premiere at the prestigious Berlinale and will be released in Slovak cinemas in March. It tells the story of a seven-year-old Romany girl searching for her lost cherub. Her determination to find Mimi leads Romy through an ancient Danube forest, where she meets characters with their own stories. Although she has lost her beloved Mimi, she finds so much more, adventure and new friends. The film was shot in the forests near Bratislava.
