Justice Ministry examining options to appeal against Hossu's parole

The Justice Ministry has requested the file concerning ex-convict Juraj Hossu, who was paroled by Trnava District Court on Wednesday after serving just under three years of his nine-year sentence that he received for beating a Filipino national to death on a street in Bratislava in 2018.

The ministry did so to examine whether there are grounds for a possible appeal against the court's decision. It explained that it can appeal against a parole decision only if specific provisions of the Criminal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure have been violated.

Hossu assaulted the Filipino, who was trying to prevent harassment of his two female colleagues, on the night of May 26, 2018. The camera footage from the street showed that Hossu first shoved the foreigner, making him fall on his knees, before kicking him in the back of the head. As the Filipino was lying on the ground unconscious, Hossu put his foot on his chest and gave him two forceful slaps, without any response from the victim. Suffering a brain hemorrhage, the Filipino died in hospital several days later.

The ex-convict's parole is set to last seven years, while at the same time he'll have to wear a monitoring anklet for three years. In addition, the court ordered him to employ himself and stay away from alcohol and drugs. Last but not least, he'll be under a curfew every day starting from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.
