In these days of February, Slovakia remembers 75 years since the establishment of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia which was incorporated into the Soviet bloc following a decision by the victorious powers of the Second World War. The February 1948 coup d'état was the result of the policy of the Communist Party, whose leadership was systematically preparing to take absolute power in the state. The communist regime subsequently prevented citizens from deciding on the governance of the state in free elections for many decades and unleashed a wave of mass terror and persecution against real and perceived opponents.
