Today, Tuesday 21 February, ambassadors of 25 countries paid tribute to the memory of Ján Kuciak and Martina Kušnírová at the SNP Square in Bratislava. They honoured them by lighting a candle at the memorial, which is dedicated to Jan and Martina. "We must strengthen freedom and democracy," said Vladimir Sucha, head of the European Commission Representation in Slovakia, on the fifth anniversary of the murder of the journalist and his fiancée. He added that if people value the life they have given, they cannot relax and forget. "We cannot let crises tire us, then we will tire democracy," Sucha added. Tamara Sternberg-Greller, head of the public diplomacy section of the US embassy, noted that the murdered journalist and his fiancée fought for media freedom, transparency and support for journalists. At the same time, media freedom and transparency are strong pillars of an open and free democracy. "It is something we should all strive to protect," she added. Among them was US Ambassador Gautam Rana. He called Martina and Jan heroes.
