President calls for earlier date of snap elections

On Thursday morning, President Zuzana Caputova stated that the current domestic political situation, characterised by a "legislative whirlwind" in Parliament that is threatening constitutional principles and public finances, is unbearable for the country. She therefore calls for an earlier snap election term than the one set for September. A similar stance came from the meeting of former presidents at a joint New Year's lunch that took place on Wednesday. Former presidents - Rudolf Schuster, Ivan Gasparovic and Andrej Kiska - agreed that an early parliamentary election should be held earlier than in September. Ivan Gasparovic recommended to Caputova that the date of the election be negotiated not only with the coalition but also with the opposition. "Then a consensus will be more likely to be reached and things that won't be good for the future of Slovakia could be adjusted," he opined, adding that he still sees room to change the date. The extraordinary parliamentary meeting regarding the June deadline for an early parliamentary election is set to begin on Thursday (February 16) at 2 p.m.
