The Interim Government will ask constitutional lawyers whether the cabinet has the power to donate Slovakia's MiG29 fighter jets to Ukraine, said acting Prime Minister Eduard Heger. According to their stance, the government will take further stpes. Heger thinks that the decision to donate fighter jets is an autonomous decision of each country and he also sees the possibility of receiving money from the European Union for the donation. He views the opposition's warnings about a possible escalation of tension and Slovakia's involvement in the war as scaremongering. "And that's maybe even an understatement; it is a lie and misleading of citizens," he said.
In the possible donation of the fighter jets to Ukraine, Heger sees Slovakia's contribution in helping a neighbouring country defending itself against Russian aggression. "[Ukrainian President] Volodymyr Zelenskyy is asking us to protect them against Russian bombs. Let's try to imagine how we would feel in their situation," he noted, reiterating that the MiG-29s have no use in Slovakia. He also objected against the statements by Smer-SD party representatives, indicating the possible declaration of a state of war in Slovakia and mobilisation. Heger labelled them lies, suggesting that a prosecutor general should deal with them.
On Monday, on the initiative of the opposition Smer-SD party, Slovak MPs met in Parliament to discuss the donation of the Mig-29 fighter.
