Italy is standing by Slovakia, ready to reinforce the NATO eastern flank by sending an air defence system, said Interim Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Rastislav Káčer following his visit in Rome, Italy, on Wednesday. There, he met with the Italian Minister for European Affairs Raffaele Fitto, Foreign Affairs Minister Antonio Tajani, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto and President of the Chamber of Deputies Lorenzo Fontana.
"I'm glad that even after thirty years of Slovakia's independence, our cooperation with Italy has been steadily growing. Our Italian friends stood by us in 1993, when they were among the first to recognise the Slovak Republic and also played an instrumental role in our Euro-Atlantic integration," underlined Káčer. The Slovak foreign minister concurred with his Italian partners that the support for Ukraine must continue and European solutions must be sought to tackle the migration and energy crisis. He also confirmed Slovakia's interest in further expanding cooperation in the economic sphere, including the defence industry.
