Passenger rail carrier ŽSSK transported almost 67.2 million passengers in 2022, thereby approaching the figures seen in the period before the coronavirus pandemic, said the company’s general director Roman Koreň on Wednesday. While in 2019 ŽSSK reported 77.3 million passengers, in the following 'COVID years' the number stood at only 46.6 million and 45.6 million people. "Lower passenger numbers during the pandemic only underlined the company's difficult situation. However, we're glad that passengers have started to return to trains despite a demanding period," stated Koreň. The number of passengers who bought tickets reached 43.9 million last year. The carrier also quantified the number of passengers who travelled free of charge at 23.1 million, compared to almost 30 million in 2019. In 2022, a single passenger bought as many as 666 tickets, most frequently for the Ostrava-Zilina route. In 2022, revenues from transporting dogs increased by almost €10,000 when compared to 2019. The number of transported bicycles reached 248,898 last year.
