Date of election remains unclear

Date of the snap parliamentary election in Slovakia remains unclear despite the fact, that a week ago the interim government agreed that it would take place in September. On Sunday, Speaker of Parliament and chair of Sme Rodina party Boris Kollár announced a proposal that would introduce a rule that after a government fall, an early general election should be held, for example, within six months. Leader of the Hlas-SD party Peter Pellegrini can imagine supporting the proposal. The Sloboda a Solidarita (SaS) party is ready for talks on changing the date of an early general election and rejected Kollár's words that SaS party leader Richard Sulík wants the September date.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Gábor Grendel respects the agreements of the former coalition partners and on Tuseday, he will vote in favour of a September date for early parliamentary elections, even though he does not find it reasonable. According to deputy speaker of the parliament, Peter Pčolinský it is likely that if no early parliamentary elections are passed in the National Council, a caretaker government will take office on Wednesday 1 February.

Pellegrini does not agree that if the September election date does not pass, there will be a caretaker government, because proposals to shorten the election period can come every month. "The president can appoint a caretaker government and we will send it into the past in three months' time because we will call elections for May or June without any problems," he said. This plan would not work, according to Kollár.
