Czech Republic prolongs random checks on borders with Slovakia

The Czech Government has decided to extend random checks on its border with Slovakia. These will be carried out by the police, while soldiers and customs officers will be withdrawn from duty, said Czech Premier Petr Fiala on Wednesday. He added that this is another step towards a gradual relaxation of the border arrangements. The Czech premier stated that the measures taken to reduce illegal migration have had a positive effect, and if the numbers of detained migrants continue to be low, border checks will be completely scrapped. "I would like to praise the Slovak side," said Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakusan. The measure, under which the Czech authorities along with Slovak police officers check passengers on trains, helped to make it possible to avoid a different interpretation of the readmission agreements, he said. The Czech Republic reintroduced checks on its border with Slovakia in the end of September, 2022, and began relaxing them at the end of last year.
