Excess mortality in Slovakia approached 20 percent in December

Excess mortality in Slovakia, i.e. the number of extra deaths when compared to the five-year average before the pandemic (2015-2019), approached a level of 20 percent in December. The Statistics Office reported this on Thursday, ascribing the high figure to the increase in the number of those who succumbed to circulatory-system and respiratory diseases. Over 5,400 people died in Slovakia in the final month of 2022, the third highest number (after March and January) to be reported for last year. Excess mortality stood at 17.8 percent, the second highest seen in 2022. Circulatory-system diseases were the most frequent causes of death in Slovakia, accounting for 47 percent (2,600 people), with cancer accounting for 22 percent (1,200 people) of the total. These two causes of death have long been among the most common in Slovakia.
