Slovakia sent another 38 police officers to the Hungarian-Serbian border to replace the previous group helping to protect this external Schengen border against illegal migration. The new group should stay there until the end of February. Acting Interior Minister Roman Mikulec, Police Corps President Stefan Hamran and head of the Border and Foreign Police Office Robert Gucky came to witness the police officers' departure on Monday. "We still believe that protecting this external Schengen border is a much more effective measure than introducing checks on internal borders within the European Union," said Mikulec, adding he's been telling EU authorities this as well. He expects illegal migration to be on the agenda of the upcoming informal summit due to take place in Sweden. Slovakia sent 30 police officers to the Frontex operations in Romania and Serbia in late December, he said. The Police Corps president praised the deployment of the Slovak police officers who served as part of the first contingent in Hungary. According to him, it shows that when an external Schengen border is guarded seriously, we have far fewer problems on internal borders.
