Slovakia sent another 38 police officers to the Hungarian-Serbian border to replace the previous group helping to protect this external Schengen border against illegal migration. The new group should stay there until the end of February.
"We still believe that protecting this external Schengen border is a much more effective measure than introducing checks on internal borders within the European Union," said Acting Slovak Interior Minister Roman Mikulec. He added that he has been spreading this attitude among EU authorities as well. He expects illegal migration to be on the agenda of the upcoming informal summit due to take place in Sweden. According to Mikulec, Slovakia also sent 30 police officers to the Frontex operations in Romania and Serbia in late December. The Police Corps President Štefan Hamran praised the deployment of the Slovak police officers who served as part of the first contingent in Hungary. "It shows that when an external Schengen border is guarded seriously, we have far fewer problems on internal borders," stated Hamran.
