President Caputova pays respects to late Viktor Fainberg

“Viktor Fainberg and his friends made it clear that the value of universal human freedom meant more to them than their own individual fates”, President Zuzana Caputova said with respect to the death of Fainberg, who as part of a group of eight dissidents had publicly protested in Moscow's Red Square against the occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1968. Fainberg died on Tuesday (January 3) at the age of 91. Along with seven other dissidents, they held banners reading "For our and your freedom" and "Hands off the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic". The whole event lasted about five minutes before they were apprehended by the Soviet KGB. Subsequently, the dissidents were sentenced to prison, banished into exile or institutionalised in psychiatric wards.
