Last year most challenging in history of Slovak military

The past year was one of the most challenging in the history of the Slovak Armed Forces and was epochal in terms of the necessary modernisation, chief of the Slovak Armed Forces' General Staff Daniel Zmeko declared on Tuesday. He pointed out that the aid provided to Ukraine had no direct influence on the reduction of Slovakia's defensive capabilities.
The Chief of General Staff underlined the need to maintain the pace of investments into modernisation and the repair of the infrastructure. "Regarding the ground forces, we've made important strategic decisions. Contracts for the basic modernisation of the ground forces have been signed, this means particularly new military vehicles," stated Zmeko, adding that he hopes battle tanks are to be procured next. "I perceive this as the catching of second breath."
The military is currently also reconstructing its barracks, with Zmeko pointing out that the military suffers from a multi-billion investment gap. (TASR)
