On Sunday, Slovakia celebrated the 30th anniversary of its establishment. The Slovak Republic came into being on January 1 1993 with the dissolution of Czechoslovakia. The division of the common state of Czechs and Slovaks was made on the political level. Slovakia became a member of NATO on 29 March 2004 and of the European Union on 1 May 2004. On 1 January 2009, Slovakia adopted the Euro as its currency.
