OLaNO leader Igor Matovic's tenure as finance minister is over, as President Zuzana Caputova tasked temporary Prime Minister Eduard Heger with heading the Finance Ministry on Friday. Matovic stepped down as finance minister after Parliament approved the 2023 State Budget, as part of a deal forged with the opposition SaS party. According to House Chair Boris Kollar, the current coalition is supposed to pass an amendment to the Constitution by the end of January to enable a snap election. If that doesn't happen, the president will appoint a caretaker government, probably in early February, a move that Kollar opposes. Heger announced that talks on a new potential parliamentary majority will be held in January. SaS leader Richard Sulik rejected any notion that the passing of the budget signals the dawn of new cooperation between SaS and the coalition. Kollar insists on a snap election, although he declared that he won't hinder the prime minister's talks on a new potential majority.
