Although the Foreign Affairs Ministry has confirmed that Slovakia is ready to give its decommissioned MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine, no official decision on the aircraft has been made yet. Defence Ministry spokeswoman Martina Koval Kakascikova reported on Monday. "Nothing has changed about the Defence Ministry's stance. We still continue to discuss with our allies what we should do with decommissioned MiGs, but no decision has been made so far. In the event of any change, we will, as we have done so far, keep everyone informed in due course," spokeswoman said. Defence Minister Jaroslav Nad and Foreign Affairs Minister Rastislav Kacer discussed the possibility of giving the decommissioned aircraft to Ukraine during their official visit to Kiev last week. Kacer told TASR at that time that Slovakia was holding talks with its NATO allies on how it could transfer the fighter jets without compromising domestic security and defence capability. The MiG-29 fighter aircraft, which formed the backbone of the Slovak supersonic tactical air force since independent Slovakia was established, were decommissioned in September. Slovak skies are currently protected by the Czech Republic and Poland. They should do so until Slovakia receives new US-made F-16s.
