Czech Republic extends checks on border with Slovakia

The Czech Republic will extend temporary checks on its border crossings with Slovakia by 14 more days. Border checks will thus remain in place until December 26. The Czech Government passed the measure on Wednesday. During the recent meeting with his counterparts from Slovakia, Hungary and Austria in Prague, Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakusan admitted that the measures might be eased during the Christmas holiday. The Czech Republic re-introduced checks on its border with Slovakia on September 29. Since then, the Czech police has detained over 9,100 illegal migrants and 130 human traffickers. According to Czech Minister Rakusan, the number of illegal migrants in the Czech Republic has decreased since the measures' introduction and, therefore, he views border checks as effective.
