The government has approved pilot contracts with investors BWSG and Kooperativa to ensure the construction of 9,000 rental apartments worth some €1.5 billion, said Parliamentary Chair Boris Kollar (Sme Rodina) according to a news conference following the cabinet session on Wednesday. According to the parliamentary head, the possibility of rental housing is currently even more important than in the past due to the growth of real estate prices and interest rates on mortgages. Vice-Premier for Legislation Stefan Holy (also Sme Rodina) pointed out that this type of apartment construction does not burden the state budget and the state acts exclusively as a regulator. He added that a website should be launched by Christmas, on which interested parties will be able to find out whether they meet the conditions for the allocation of a rental flat. Different conditions are set for each self-governing region and for each of the four types of flats. The rental apartments will be intended for lifelong living, and after the first five years, the fixed-term lease should be changed to an indefinite period.
