President Zuzana Caputova was given the Madeleine Albright Award for Democracy on Tuesday evening in Washington. The head of state's spokesman Martin Strizinec added that she was receiving the award for her tireless efforts to promote and protect democracy. The prize is awarded by the US National Democratic Institute. The president did not attend the event in person. Moldovan President Maia Sandu and Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte also received awards. Another laureate this year is Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the courage of the Ukrainian people who, under his leadership, are defending democracy against a brutal attack. From this year, the award for democracy bears the name of former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.
