Tests show leak at Mochovce nuclear power plant

Power utility Slovenske elektrarne has interrupted the commissioning of the third reactor block at Mochovce nuclear power plant in western Slovak region of Nitra after discovering a small leak in the reactor. The utility’s spokeswoman Olga Bakova told the media on Tuesday that once the unit is re-sealed, the tests and commissioning of the reactor will continue next week. The construction of the reactor block began in 1987, but the work was later suspended for several years. In November 2008, power utility Slovenske elektrarne started completing the process. The new nuclear unit in Mochovce will have an installed capacity of 471 megawatts, which will cover approximately 13 percent of Slovakia’s total electricity consumption. The country will become a net exporter of electricity when the reactor reaches maximum output.
