Brussels could provide an extra year for Slovakia for the drawing of EU funds in the current programming period. On Tuesday, the European Commission proposed to extend by one year the deadline for spending a part of EU funds in Slovakia which were initially to be drawn by the end of 2013.
According to Prime Minister Robert Fico, this measure should also apply to the commitment for 2012. In addition to Slovakia, the proposed change should also apply to Romania. However, the change still requires approval of the Council of Foreign Ministers and also the European Parliament. Prime Minister Robert Fico discussed this topic on Wednesday at a bilateral meeting with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso. According to Fico, the Slovak government has developed an initiative in this direction because there is a risk it would not be able to draw the EU funds on time to the amount of €300 million.
