The number of foreign tourists in Slovakia, but also in the world, should reach 65% of pre-pandemic levels by the end of the year, according to the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). It is estimated that 700 million tourists travelled abroad worldwide between January and September. It is more than double compared to the same period in 2021. During the first nine months of this year, international tourism reached 62% of its pre-pandemic level. According to experts at the World Tourism Organisation, this trend suggests that international tourism is expected to reach 65% of 2019-levels worldwide this year.
Bratislava in particular has long been dependent on foreign tourists. Before the pandemic their number was at 70%, currently there are approximately twice as many foreigners as domestic visitors, according to the Bratislava Tourist Board. Almost four times as many people stayed overnight in Bratislava from the beginning of the year to the end of August than last year. In August, a year-on-year increase of more than 80% was posted. In addition to Czechs, Austrians, and Germans, visitors from the United Kingdom and the United States also came to the capital of Slovakia.
