Budaj: agreement adopted at COP27 should have been more ambitious

Environment minister Jan Budaj said that the climate agreement that was adopted by countries at the 2022 UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) should and could have been more ambitious. "The UN Climate Summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, has ended after two weeks with the adoption of conclusions, which, however, cannot be assessed entirely positively, given the low level of ambition in the fight against climate change," Budaj said. The minister pointed to the fact that the devastating effects of global warming are being observed in various parts of the world on an everyday basis. According to Budaj, Slovakia's and other European countries' expectations of the summit were higher, especially in terms of the use of all fossil fuels. As for the issue of damage and loss caused by climate change, the minister said the EU made significant concessions in order to reach a compromise. "A group of ambitious countries and the EU agreed to establish a new fund, but greater willingness was expected from all states, especially the largest emitters, in particular in the form of strengthening commitments concerning greenhouse gas emission reductions," he remarked. Budaj noted that this wasn't translated into the final conclusions of the summit, which the Slovak delegation saw as a clear disappointment.
