Rudolf Kusý, outgoing mayor of Bratislava's Nové Mesto borough, who unsuccessfully ran for the post of the mayor of Bratislava city this autumn was charged of corruption. He is suspected of having taken a bribe of €150 000 as part of a construction procedure he decided on as mayor of Nové Mesto. The police are also investigating another suspicion of bribery amounting to €220 000 for intermediaries who participated in the handling of the construction procedure at the Nové Mesto Hall.
He is suspected to have accepted or soliciting bribes on a large scale as a public official amounting to €133 000 or more. If found guilty, he could be sentenced to from ten and fifteen years in prison.
Police president Štefan Hamran confirmed that police are also looking into the financing of the election campaign, which was the most expensive of any candidate in Slovakia. Questions around Kusý arose after the chair of the non-parliamentary Christian Democratic Movement Milan Majerský said in an interview for the Denník N daily, that Kusý received €80 000 from the party’s account. However, Majerský said the sum did not come from the party but from a donor, who sent it to the party.
