Slovakia pledged to jointly reduce global methane emissions by at least 30% by 2030 compared to 2020. Having signed the Global Pledge on Methane at the climate summit in Egypt, the country joined a group of 150 states that have decided to fight one of the most aggressive greenhouse gases. According to Michal Kiča, Slovak Deputy Environment Minister, reducing methane’s emissions should help improve public health as well as agricultural productivity. Slovakia has already reduced methane emissions by more than 55% since 1990. It wants to reduce it further through measures in energy, agriculture and waste management. "By reducing the volume of landfilled waste, ending mining in the lignite mines in the Upper Nitra region, and greening agricultural production, we are protecting the climate from the devastating effects of methane," Kiča explained.
