Gov't to discuss reintroducing NBU's power to block harmful content on internet

Among other matters, the Government at its session on Wednesday is set to deal with an amendment to the cyber security law that would reintroduce the National Security Bureau's (NBU) power to block harmful content on the internet that might damage or endanger the security, foreign policy and economic interests of the state and could be viewed as a hybrid threat. The bureau could, for instance, block content that may cause a weakening of democratic institutions, targeted political destabilisation, the radicalisation of political discourse among the public or a fundamental impediment to the functioning of public authorities and the ability to adopt their decisions. NBU would be allowed to do this only with permission from a court, based on a preceding motion filed by designated authorities. (TASR)
