The third block of the Mochovce nuclear power plant has been running at its minimum controlled output since the Slovenske elektrarne energy utility launched a fission reaction in the new reactor on Saturday, October 22. "This is an extremely important watershed in the process of launching a nuclear reactor into operation. … The full output is expected to be reached in the beginning of next year," said SE general director Branislav Strycek. Mochovce director Martin Mraz added that launch tests have been performed in the block, with the reactor output to be increased gradually.
The completion of Mochovce plant construction was marked by significant cost overruns, as the original estimated €3-billion costs have swelled into more than €6 billion. The fourth block of the power plant is expected to be launched into operation in 2024. The state owns a 34-percent share in the SE.
