Police head: counter-terrorism units need to be bolstered

Following a session of the Security Council on Wednesday, Interior Minister Roman Mikulec refused to specify the names of the politicians who were on the hit list of the shooter who killed two people in Bratislava last week. The minister claimed that necessary measures have been taken in this case, however, adding that these also concern Prime Minister Eduard Heger, whom the shooter originally wanted to target. Meanwhile, Police Corps chief Stefan Hamran said that he wants to bolster the personnel in specialised units dedicated to counter-terrorism and counter-extremism to prevent similar incidents in the future. At the same time, he also stressed the need to reinforce the ranks of units dealing with cyber crime and to step up international cooperation in this area. According to Defence Minister Jaroslav Nad, military intelligence has monitored a number of groups in Slovakia that have connections with radicals and former members of the armed forces. (TASR)
