Slovakia joins EU mission to train Ukrainian soldiers

Slovakia will join the EU's mission to train Ukrainian soldiers. Chief of Slovak diplomacy Rastislav Káčer declared after a session of the EU's foreign affairs council in Luxembourg on Monday. The EU foreign ministers approved a military training mission for members of the Ukrainian armed forces. According to Káčer, Ukraine must defend itself from the escalating aggression by Russia and the survival of Ukraine is also an essential interest of Slovakia. The diplomats concurred that the EU will continue to support Ukraine because peace can be achieved only if Russia stops its attack and withdraws its forces. "No deal behind the back of Ukraine is acceptable to us," he said. Káčer specified that the new EU training mission for Ukraine will have centres in Poland and Germany. "I have expressed my support for this mission, saying that we are ready to provide instructors and, if necessary, our training facilities in Slovakia, which are of an excellent standard," he added. In Luxembourg, the Council of Ministers condemned the continued Russian attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine and approved additional funding for the European Peace Facility (EPF). Káčer explained that the EU can use the fund to finance defence and military support to Ukraine.
