President calls for systemic changes to fight poverty

On the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, President of the Slovak Republic Zuzana Čaputová said that the number of people at risk of income poverty has increased and social inequalities have deepened. She calls for systemic changes, such as affordable decent housing or a sufficient and strong social support network. "Data on the living conditions of our households show that the number of people at risk of income poverty has increased. In the first year of the pandemic, the positive trend of reducing people at risk of income poverty has reversed and increased by 45 thousand people and now affects a total of about 660 thousand people," the President wrote on social media. According to the President, urgent action is needed. "We need systemic changes - affordable decent housing even for those living in poverty and exclusion, a sufficient and solid social support network and an education system that will correct social inequalities, not exacerbate them," she stressed.
