Defence Minister Naď: Russian embassy’s activities beyond standard diplomacy

The activities of the Russian Embassy and Ambassador Igor Bratchikov are far beyond what can be accepted as standard diplomatic activity, said Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď. He mentioned various unacceptable activities of people from the Russian embassy, late-night meetings with representatives of local governments or certain organisations, as well as spreading lies on social networks and about support for various extremist organisations. Other decisions by the Slovak side are, in his words, very sensitive in terms of bilateral relations.

Regarding the consideration of denying visas to Russians fleeing the country, he noted that this is a difficult discussion. On the one hand, in his words, they represent a certain security risk, but on the other hand, he does not consider it right to generalise and not to help the fleeing people. He sees the need for the embassy to do its job properly in assessing each visa applicant.

The minister also pointed to a series of cyber-attacks by the Russian Federation in the past week, targeting both state and private organisations. He said the attack on the Defence Department's networks had also been averted. He praised the work of both the National Security Bureau and the cyber defence centre within his department.
