Around 16% of Slovaks were at risk of income poverty or social exclusion last year, 6% are suffering from severe material deprivation and one in four cannot cope with higher unexpected expenses according to Matej Horňák, an analyst at Slovenska sporiteľna. He said that in times of energy crisis and economic slowdown, these results are even more serious than before. These are especially groups of people such as large families, single parents, or single pensioners, where the increased risk of poverty or social exclusion is most often observed. The share of the population at risk of income poverty or social exclusion increased by about two percentage points year-on-year and is the highest since 2017. According to the analyst, regional disparities may also deepen, as the social situation is closely linked to employment.
