78 years since Dukla Pass Battle

The Dukla Pass Battle still reminds us of the courage and patriotism of our ancestors, President Zuzana Caputova posted on a social network in connection with the 78th anniversary of the WWII battle. As she added, the battle is a symbol that every totalitarian regime inevitably succumbs sooner or later to the indomitable human desire for freedom. In the battle for the Dukla Pass, Soviet forces broke through into Slovakia from Poland in the autumn of 1944, suffering heavy casualties as a result.
"We remember with gratitude and reverence the liberators of 78 years ago. At the same time, today, when a military conflict has flared up again near our eastern border, we again with all urgency realise what a huge value peace, freedom and a peaceful life have - and how easily these things can be endangered," stated the head of state.
Caputova added that she had not forgotten about Dukla, even though due to her participation in a summit of presidents in Malta, she is far from the sites of commemoration associated with the battle. The president's office was represented at a commemoration at Dukla by military office head Vladimir Simko.
