Parliament ok’d on Tuesday a Labour Ministry-sponsored amendment to the Labour Code which introduced two weeks of paid leave for fathers, even if the mother receives maternity or parental allowance at the same time. The amendment, which transposes EU directives into Slovakia's legal order, will be effective from November 2022. The law was supported by 132 of the 133 lawmakers present. According to the Labour, Social Affairs and Family Ministry, the legislation aims to support a more even distribution of caregiving duties between women and men and to create a bond between the father and child at an early age, as soon as possible after birth.
