Discussion on Finance Minister’s ouster ended as MP collapsed

The ongoing parliamentary session had to be suspended after 4 p.m. on Thursday as OLaNO MP Jan Kerekreti collapsed in the chamber. Kerekreti, aged 78, was given first aid by other MPs until the arrival of paramedics. Parliament opened another day of its ongoing session on Friday with no votes to be taken. The next voting should take place on Tuesday, October 4. MPs should decide on all points that have been debated during the current session, plus on the no-confidence motion in Finance Minister Igor Matovic (OLaNO).

On Thursday, eight lawmakers made their speeches in the discussion of the no-confidence motion in Igor Matovic from the post of Finance Minister. He spoke at the beginning and at the end of the extraordinary meeting, with his second speech taking more than two hours. The minister claimed that if Parliament manages to oust him, the Freedom and Solidarity party would be invited to rejoin the coalition. He stressed in this vein that such a move would be against his wishes, but he would not veto it. Matovic pointed to the fact that there are several concurrent crises in place, and so the interests of the public must be defended. "Now is a too damn serious time for Slovakia for someone to vent his personal problems and his uncontrollable ego and try to take revenge on someone who occupies the post he's always wanted," he told SaS leader Richard Sulik, referring to Sulik's publicly known aspirations to head the Finance Ministry.
