Insufficient progress in the EU-financed effort to improve the situation of marginalized Roma communities in Slovakia was criticised by European Commissioner for Equality Helena Dalli during her visit to eastern Slovakia on Wednesday. "The European Union is spending a lot of resources on this goal, but we need to see that the resources have been put to a proper use and really help these communities improve their lives," said Dalli. The Commissioner visited Roma settlements of Habes in Secovce and the village of Kecerovce, and discussed the issue with representatives of NGOs in Kosice. Based on this, she stated that the situation calls for many changes, despite certain progress seen in housing and education. "An important aspect I've noticed remains the problem of segregation," she claimed, adding that Roma inclusion must remain a priority.
