Finland and Sweden are closer to joining NATO

The parliamentary defence committee on Monday approved the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO and recommended that Parliament should give the relevant accession protocols the green light. The accession of the two Nordic countries to NATO was previously approved by the government in June. The Cabinet also agreed to ratify the documents. The protocols must be now approved by Parliament. Once the House gives its consent, President Zuzana Caputova will be able to ratify them. Finland and Sweden announced their intention to renounce neutrality and join NATO after Russia invaded Ukraine in February. Only Turkey has opposed their demands, demanding concessions from Helsinki and Stockholm in exchange for its acceptance of their membership of the Alliance.
